Insurance companies help Bryan Co. tornado victims file claims

BRYAN CO, Ga. (WTOC) – Numerous homes in the Hendrix Park area, directly across from the Park Place subdivision, were destroyed by the tornado last week.

This means that many of these homeowners will need to file insurance claims to help them get the resources they need to get back on their feet.

Several insurance companies were on hand to help people file claims Monday morning at Lanier Elementary School.

Officers say they were on hand to help streamline the process for people who may not be able to access phone service or the internet and to answer any questions.

While the process here appeared to be going smoothly today, an official with the Georgia Office of the Insurance Commissioner said some insurance companies are not getting back in touch with consumers quickly enough.

She says some companies hold their insurance for a week or two, but their office is working to help file those claims quickly.

“We phoned the insurance companies to let them know that Commissioner King wanted them to be there to help consumers. They have been devastated enough. They have paid for these insurance policies and they need to be able to use their coverage,” said JoAnne Oni, Director of Consumer Services, Office of the Insurance and Fire Commissioner.

If you weren’t able to make it to today’s event and need help filing an insurance claim, the commissioner’s office asks you to call them, and they can help you file this claim. The number is 1-800-656-2298.

Although insurance agents were on hand Monday to help file claims, many people are getting emotional as they recount their experiences with the tornado.

Even as help arrives, the devastation is still present.
